Explain Alcohol

Conversation Starters

For parents who want to talk to their children about alcohol.

Talking to Children – when we spoke to children they said they wanted to find out more information about alcohol – dilemmas and facts cards would be a good way to do it – they said to pick the good times to chat maybe after soaps or during car journeys – but you know your children best.

Dilemma 3

Your best friend is really down and she tells you that it’s because when her Mum drinks she is really nasty to her and says horrible things to her. You’re not sure if your friend is telling you everything or not.

This is a really hard one.

> back to dilemmas

1. If she gets you to promise not to tell anyone. Do you
i. Do what she asks?

ii. Talk to an adult you can trust but not tell her?

iii. Talk to an adult you can trust but tell her?

There are no easy answers to this but if you do 2 or 3 at least an adult may be able to do their best to make sure your friend is safe.

2. What might be the easiest thing to get your friend to do.

Suggest to your friend to phone Childline 08001111 and ask for advice.

3. Do you try to help her on your own.

Friends should look after each other but problems like this can be very difficult - we wouldn’t expect an adult to solve them on their own so why should you. Adults would probably try to get some advice or at least talk to friends about it. We all need help sometimes.
