Explain Alcohol

Conversation Starters

For parents who want to talk to their children about alcohol.

Talking to Children – when we spoke to children they said they wanted to find out more information about alcohol – dilemmas and facts cards would be a good way to do it – they said to pick the good times to chat maybe after soaps or during car journeys – but you know your children best.

Dilemma 1

You and your friends find a girl collapsed in the park who, you had been told earlier, was really drunk.

> back to dilemmas

1. Would giving her black coffee help ?

No.

Coffee doesn’t stop the effect of alcohol at all. Only time will help sober a person up. It takes the liver about an hour to break down the alcohol in half a pint of beer or a swig of vodka.

2. Do you lie her on her front or back?

Put her in the ‘recovery position’ - on her front with head to the side so she doesn’t choke on her vomit (look at the card with a picture of the ‘recovery position’).

3. If she is lying safely do you leave her to sleep it off?

No.

She could be robbed or assaulted - also alcohol makes your body get cold very quickly so keep her warm. You should phone an ambulance 999, stay with her until they come and if necessary contact your home to tell your parents/carers.
